how to become thane of riften with laila

How do I become Thane of Riften?

This may be glitched but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to be named Thane of Riften. Ive talked to the Argonian at the fishery. I've done the quests for the Jarl including the "quill" one. But when I talk to her all does is say "Hmmm.?" It even shows under Misc. quests to "See Jarl of Riften" and she actually has the little arrow above her head to interact with, but all she does is say "Hmmmmm?"

Am I glitched? Ive done a number of quests for people in Riften but all I get is "Hmmmm?" or she says "Jarl ______ ______ suits me dont you think?" or something like that.

I already own the fully upgraded Honeyside Home. Its just that this is the only hold where I am not a Thane.

It's a bug. I think It occours when you buy your house and leave to check it out. When you come back... bugged Jarl.
Could also be cause by buying upgrades. Only way to fix this is reload earlier save

illoran is right. In order to avoid this, you have to buy the house, but do NOT go "look at it". Turn right back around to Laila and talk to her again. You will immediately become Thane. THEN upgrade the house etc.

I got bugged, too, not by fleas, or by Thalmor spies. I got the Thane, bought the house, didn't upgrade it, didn't talk to her again, went and looked at the house. Went and did about three hrs worth of quests, then went back and upgraded. Tried talking to Laila and no dialog. Oh well. House upgraded, but no housecarl eating bread while sitting and staring at me sleep. It's okay the guards think I've got this big dog living there.

Well, m'dear, if I could gift you "my" housecarl I would. I always MarkForDelete her (well.... all of them actually. Stupid gits. I have NO use for them or for followers or husbands.... Gah.)

Which Argonian at the fishery did you speak to? There are 2. Have you done the Skooma trade quests? That is the only way to become Thane of Riften.

I spoke to the chick Argonian and did the skooma quest. Looks like I just may be bugged/glitched. I'll try to do some more favors for people there and see if something changes. The fact that she (Maven) has the arrow over her head and I am unable to enter into dialogue says its bugged.

Monk.... there's another possible problem. If you use an altstart setup (any of the mods out there now, or just make your own like I've done), the house convos do NOT work right. Thaneship seems to be fine, but even though the Jarl will tell you to buy the house, the steward doesn't ever have that convo option.
